One dictum I had learned on the battlefields of France in a far distant war: You cannot save the world, but you might save the man in front of you, if you work fast enough.

About This Quote

During World War I, a German soldier was shot in the leg. The medics were able to save the soldier’s life, but it took a long time. In the meantime, the soldier was in a lot of pain and his leg was swollen. The medics gave him morphine, but it did not help very much.

Then an American medic who saw what was going on decided to give the man a shot of morphine. It worked immediately, and the patient went from being in extreme pain to being pain free within a few minutes. The German soldier later said that he would not have lived without that one shot of morphine from the American medic.
